I went into this already a huge DEVO fan and came out a Chi Chi Rodriguez fan. What a special and heartwarming piece this was. It could honestly fill an entire feature length film combining the life stories of DEVO and Chi Chi but nothing is as wonderful as the real thing from the mouths of the actual people involved. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.
Player haters in every generations whether it's sports or music. Very cool true life story, enjoyed it very much. In this generation of 2024 we need Devolution now more than 🇺🇸having to be born in 1967 and grew up in the 70's - 2024 we need Devolution. Chi-chi Rodriguez & Devo are both iconic of Americana. ❤🇺🇸
Watching Gerald Casale play golf with Chi Chi Rodriguez... and they're both smiling and having fun... it actually made me smile and laugh out loud. I LOVE The story. The mutant Chi-Chi vs real Chi-Chi is truly DEVO and so much fun. I love seeing Mark recount this story as well. The footage of Chi-Chi- and Gerald meeting and golfing is priceless.
What an intensely heartwarming story with such a wonderful ending!! Mr Rodriguez was so gracious. He could’ve taken de-evolution a step further, but decided to go the human way. In my high school days in the mid to late 70’s I was devolving in the Netherlands. It was there in a record store that I found the “Be Stiff” single. I used to draw a lot, and the Devo artwork stood out to me immediately. I was hooked ever since!! Many bootleg albums (picture discs and regular Devo pressings) later, I still find that time to be the most dynamic in my life. I was also a skateboarder.... I still spin my Devo disks on my turntable regularly. My children are well-versed in de-evolution (Devo taught me to park my car in her garage).
I never ever heard of Chi Chi until now. But his image is impaled in my brain over 40 years, even its not his image. What a curiosity.😄👍 RIP Chi Chi. 🕯️
"One of the things we learned from Kent State was that Rebellion was obsolete." That level of truth-telling is something I always loved about Devo -- something I could never explain to my friends. They turned genuine despair into intelligent humor.
As a Gen Xer i learned that lesson from WACO, 911 and was reminded again with Covid. But i still wonder if my gen and following gens really understood what happened. As if my knowledge was exclusively mine and the few friends of mines sometimes. Cause things just seem to devolve ever more. I suppose that's inevitable.
in the Reno casino dice dealing world, we had to take care of golfers. i hated them. they were "STIFF" [bad tippers]. i would scream out "are we not men" when they were not taking care of the cocktail hostess. and then say we are devo !!! and laff.... THIS WAS GREAT !!! thank you....rockettebob
R.I.P. Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez. You not only represented what was best in golf, but you also represented what was best in men. We were most blessed indeed to have you within our world.
I used to hear "Be Stiff" at UCLA all the time in the late 70s. Devo already had fans at UCLA before "Are We Not Met" was even released. "Be Stiff" was not included on the American release of the album. It's a funny thing. I'd hear it on the local UCLA station even dining at a burger joint in Westwood. There was something happening back then. A great time.
For those of us a certain age at all makes perfect sense. I remember watching Chi Chi as a kid and seemed like a great guy, now it's hard not to love the guy.
After a 2011 Devo performance (at Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville, WA...outdoors in the pouring rain), Mark M. and Gerald C. were heading from the main stage to the distant back stage area in a golf cart. They cruised past my friends and I slowly as we walked toward the parking lot. We ran up to them to shake their hands and congratulate them on a great show. Mark told us, "Don't forget to buy an energy dome!"
So the last time I saw Devo in concert I believe was 1982 in Riverside California. I have tickets for Berlin on August 15 to see them on their last tour. It’s been quite a journey for both of us. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
God I love this. I played competitive golf in high school and have played drums in several bands (even playing "Whip It" while singing Mark's parts - always a personal highlight of every gig) and I can safely say that rarely those two social circles ever crossed paths. I always knew Chi Chi was on the cover but I never knew why and thought maybe it was just a random photo they picked.
I had heard rumors of the story of Are We Not Men?, but I laughed out loud. HARD. The confluence of musicianship, golf, copyright law, and stuffy suit types all conspired to give us this masterpiece. Couldn't be more Devo if it tried! And it's so cool to see that Chi Chi was a good sport about it.
On the GOLF Channel, no less! Perfect. This makes me think of all the times I ended up watching golf on t.v. with my grandparents. I wonder what they made of Chi Chi. What would they have made of Devo? They might have said something like, "He'll grow out of it." Fortunately, I didn't.
When they talked about making their own videos even before MTV, that was how they started their show when we saw them in Vancouver. We sort of knew about them but by playing a few of their videos before coming on stage we were totally revved up to see them.....
When I was a kid, Chi Chi was my favorite golfer because he had such a love of life. I'm glad that he was also such a good person. He will be missed. This was a really fun story - and one I wasn't aware of. Hat tip to Devo!
What a lovely story, brilliantly told, exquisitely captured, directed and edited, where youcome away with a love for everyone in the film. Truly a seminal example and inspiration for aspiring filmmakers. 3:43 "It's not rebellion that was winning the day, it was subversion, and one of the things we learned from Kent State, is that rebellion was obsolete... You definitely found out how far you could go... You found out that there was a wall" 6:37 Great Chi Chi quote: "Music is something that's supposed to sooth your heart and fix your mind, not something to get you riled up" - "you live with your needs, not with your wants" 14:20 Brilliant how the music follows and ties the story line together to build anticipation, and stops on the plot-twist. And here how the editor jump-cut the dialogue from different people to build sentences and the story. Also brilliant how they cut the Warner Brothers Jewish attorney's dialogue, and on the hard points with him looking directly into the camera. 16:00 Another timeless Chi Chi Quote: "I like to help the Young people. Any man that don't help the young people to take your places in society is on the wrong planet" 19:00 "Where art and commerce collide, and a better ending than anyone could have imagined" 21:30 Chi Chi: "Putting is not golf. Putting is a state of mind... You think you're gonna make it, you make it! - Everything is possible in America isn't it?"
I've loved this band for over 45 years. A lot of friends wondered why, this helps explain a lot....sometimes you should trust your instincts when you hear something amazing...
I've always wondered what that image was about. I wore out my LP, had the album cover on my wall as art in college, and years later a record store owner friend gave me the marble vinyl version, which I have never played (I have the original 6-pack coloured vinyl LP set that I spin now). Gotta head over to the website(s) to order merch, for old time's sake! What a good story.
I'll never forget the exact moment my Punk rock self showed my semi-professional golf coworker the first DEVO album in the early 1980s. I brought the album into work, where we had a turntable in the office. My coworker goes "THAT'S Chi-Chi Rodrigues! Oh my God!" He had never heard of Devo and I had not heard of Chi-Chi. A pinnacle moment in time circa 1982. And now, the rest of the story...finally.
You'd think for a band from Akron, Ohio there would be elements of the game of golf influencing them. Think of the Firestone Country Club (or is it the Good Year Country Club? Maybe both tire companies have there own separate country clubs?) hosting golf tournements for who knows how knows long? Golf, Chi Chi Rodriguez and DEVO seem like a natural combination!
What a gracious guy. My mom barely watched any golf, but Chi Chi was always her favorite. I'm glad that you had a chance to explain things out, even if it seemed he didn't have any bad feelings. Thanks for uploading this!
I remember playing that album on my mom and dad's general electric floor model stereo in 1978, I was 12, my mother just laughed she was 30 my father was 31, I do not know if they got it or what... I had only known about DEVO from magazines that had stories about science fiction movies and television shows like SPACE: 1999 and so on... the art was ahead of its time RETRO it became like the J.Geils "LOVE STINKS" album... DEVO changed ROCK and ROLL direction... Neil Young got it, though it seems... I mean enjoying DEVO didn't mean dressed like them it meant you had a good time with friends and family...
Yes! Chi Chi was a major inspiration to me as I learned the game of golf. And I immediately loved Devo upon hearing the first single, and subsequently seeing you guys all over M-TV. Thanks so much for sharing this story!
So perfect that this was actually made for, and played on, a golf channel! Chi Chi started changing golf in the 50s ...... so much so that it was finally ready to celebrate its brush with DEVO!
Loved every second of this. When I was a kid my dad would watch golf and I always remembers seeing Chi Chi. He truly stood out. He is awesome. DEVO is one of my favorite bands and love this video.
I went into this already a huge DEVO fan and came out a Chi Chi Rodriguez fan. What a special and heartwarming piece this was. I’m definitely buying and rocking the hat while golfing
Seeing Jerry get emotional handing him the social fools single was incredible

I was moved to tears by this film.
"I'm so lucky", "Me To" says Chi Chi..... what a wonderful, wonderful Man. RIP to an All Time Great Human.
It's great to see Chi-Chi again after all these years, he made Sunday afternoons watching the PGA tour more enjoyable.
Never knew that cover was Chi-Chi.
I’m a golfing Puerto Rican, DEVO fanatic. The stars have aligned.
Great doco....really enjoyed it. Chi Chi is an honorary Spud!
RIP chi chi, he passed away today, August 8th. Long live the qna cover and long live Rodriguezs legacy

DEVO perform What We Do DEVO Live on Lopez Tonight George Lopez Show September-9-26-2010 Part 7
I never ever heard of Chi Chi until now. But his image is impaled in my brain over 40 years, even its not his image. What a curiosity.😄👍
RIP Chi Chi. 🕯️

What's a good thing the black civil rights leaders didn't rely on white liberals to help them, if that's their mentality.
What a nice, warm gentleman Chi chi is. This was a great watch.
in the Reno casino dice dealing world, we had to take care of golfers. i hated them. they were "STIFF" [bad tippers]. i would scream out "are we not men" when they were not taking care of the cocktail hostess. and then say we are devo !!! and laff.... THIS WAS GREAT !!! thank you....rockettebob
What a beautiful world us mutants live in...

Too cool. I've always wondered who that golfer was on that album cover, very neat story. Thank you 😁
I had that first Devo single in and album 79 and thought it was some 50s type advert bloke, never heard of chi chi.
I'd never heard of Chichi, now it all makes sense. I hope in my next life I'll have pals like Gerry and Mark.
For those of us a certain age at all makes perfect sense. I remember watching Chi Chi as a kid and seemed like a great guy, now it's hard not to love the guy.
This is my favourite video on RUclips.
What a wonderful film. At the end, just two spuds riding off in a golf cart to bin, sweet bin.
After a 2011 Devo performance (at Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville, WA...outdoors in the pouring rain), Mark M. and Gerald C. were heading from the main stage to the distant back stage area in a golf cart. Duty now for the future, spud.
You gotta keep your fingers close to your hands!
amazing story
I did a lot of golf club (equipment ) work for Chi Chi when I was younger. He is a great person and a wonderful friend
Thanks for sharing! He obviously transcended the golf 'world'.
So the last time I saw Devo in concert I believe was 1982 in Riverside California. I have tickets for Berlin on August 15 to see them on their last tour. It’s been quite a journey for both of us. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Thank you Jerry. Thank you Chi Chi. This was the best thing I could possibly watch this weekend! We're All Devo!
God I love this. 61 still find new things that blow my mind love it
I LOVE this story!!!! Thank you, DEVO and thank you, CHI CHI.

Born in 1989... Devo was my first music... Has made me who I am. Thanks yall

What a guy.
I've loved this band for over 45 years. A lot of friends wondered why, this helps explain a lot....sometimes you should trust your instincts when you hear something amazing...
Q: are we not men ? A: we are all chi chi !!!
This was an awesome documentary. I bought this album in 1979, when I was in high school. Only now, Dec 2023, do I know who the dude on the cover is.
LOVE this story ❤.

I love Chi-Chi and his brother singing ❤. I remember watching him on TV back in the 70s, cool golfer!
Who knew I needed to know this!?! So glad I found this❤❤❤
Great story! Thanks!
I always wondered why the two different images. Thanks for solving the mystery!
This is such a great story! Thanks for sharing.

Devolved Chi Chi mutant face actually makes more sense. Can't believe Gerry and Bob really not know what they were trying to do?
First set of clubs I had were Chi Chi Rodriguez Jr. set from Northwestern.
Chi chi was always a favorite! So charming
Chi Chi is a class act. RIP.
The magic Juan flew -- Woooooo hooooo!!!
awesome story i love that album devo is one of my favorite groups
wow what a great story and honor it must have been to finally meet Chi Chi
Wow... never knew it was Chi Chi.. thanks internet.
I really enjoyed this, all these years I never knew. "Putting is a state of mind."-Chi Chi Rodriguez. So true.
Meta AF. Thank you kind sir. See you at Devo-tional 2022?!? 👌
Damn! This was one hell of story! I never knew...but now I do😃👍👌
Good vibes from beginning to end.
Thanks for giving credit where due
Such a cool story
Great story about the sleeve….. We’re All DEVO
You'd think for a band from Akron, Ohio there would be elements of the game of golf influencing them. Think of the Firestone Country Club (or is it the Good Year Country Club? I wonder if DEVO ever did a cover of Neil Young's song "Ohio"? After all, they were there for the riot at Kent State.
Such a great story to be told!
Never knew the origin of that iconic cover!
Thanks for sharing!
THAT WAS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!
Wow. Hardcore DEVO fan and never knew Be Stiff was the first single released! This was a beautiful and perfectly filmed piece. Thank you!
I've owned this record since it came out (still have it), and I didn't know any of this. This is gold.
Fantastic!
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Gerald, you continue to be an inspiration. Just wanted to tell you…
Loved this!! RIP Chi Chi~ 😢❤
The mutant cover looks like NFL's Tom Brady.
That cover is on the wall in my office. And I’ve been a Patriots fan for years. However, I never put that together. It does look like Brady.
Devolution is real, always was true, and truer with every passing minute.
What a GREAT story! Thank you for sharing Gerald!

Awesome vid. What a great story. Chi Chi is the man. What a sweet humble man😎
I’m so glad I stumbled across you channel. As a lifelong DEVO fan my hats of to you. Ground breaking music that Never gets old.
Thank you Spuds!!
This is absolutely wonderful
How did I miss this?!
Fascinating! Thanks so much for this bit of DEVO history I never knew about!
What a fantastic video! I remember chi chi when I was a child.
I loved that!
On the green, Chi Chi Rodriguez.
